# AML API

The Crypto APIs AML API checks a crypto wallet or transaction for links to
scams, exploits or sanctioned parties. Run it before you credit a deposit or
send a withdrawal. Each check returns a risk band, a 0–100 score, risk
categories and the sources behind them, sanctions included.

AML checks run on your Blockchain API subscription: they are paid from its
credits, with the same API key.

## What does one AML check return?

```
curl https://rest.cryptoapis.io/aml/addresses/{address} \
  -H "X-API-Key: YOUR_API_KEY"
```

```json
{
  "isFlagged": true,
  "riskBand": "severe",
  "riskScore": 100,
  "severity": "critical",
  "categories": ["sanctions"],
  "sources": [{ "provider": "ofac_sdn", "sanctionPrograms": ["CYBER2"] }],
  "isKnown": true
}
```

## What can the AML API screen?

- **Address screening** — `GET /aml/addresses/{address}`: check any wallet
  before you send to it or accept funds from it.
  [Verify Address](https://developers.cryptoapis.io/v-2.2024-12-12-175/RESTapis/address-aml/verify-address/get)
- **Transaction screening (KYT)** — `GET /aml/transactions/{blockchain}/{transactionHash}`:
  screen each deposit and withdrawal before you credit or send it; flags the
  addresses on both sides.
  [Screen Transaction](https://developers.cryptoapis.io/v-2.2024-12-12-175/RESTapis/transaction-aml/screen-transaction/get)
- **Sanctions screening** — every check matches addresses against the OFAC, UK,
  EU and UN sanctions lists and names the program.
- **Exposure (fund tracing)** — `GET /aml/exposure/{blockchain}/{address}`:
  whether an address received funds traceable to sanctioned or flagged
  addresses, directly or through intermediate hops, with the share of flagged
  funds; List Address Exposure Paths shows the paths.
  [Get Address Exposure](https://developers.cryptoapis.io/v-2.2024-12-12-175/RESTapis/address-aml/get-address-exposure/get)
- **Address monitoring** — coming soon: we re-screen monitored addresses and
  send a webhook when their risk changes.
- **Wallet profiles** — coming soon: labels, entity, counterparties and
  activity of a wallet.

## How does KYT fit a deposit flow?

1. **Deposit detected** — a webhook tells you funds arrived.
2. **Screen the transaction** — one KYT call returns risk and sanctions.
3. Decide by your rules: **low** — credit it; **medium** — send to your
   compliance queue; **high or sanctioned** — hold, do not credit, and report as
   your policy requires.

## FAQ

**What is a crypto AML API?** A crypto AML API checks a wallet address or a
transaction for links to illicit activity before you accept or send funds.
Crypto APIs returns a risk band, a 0–100 score, risk categories and the sources
behind them in one JSON response.

**What is KYT?** KYT means Know Your Transaction. It is the screening of each
incoming or outgoing crypto transaction, so you can hold a risky deposit before
you credit it or stop a withdrawal to a risky address. Our Screen Transaction
endpoint is a KYT API.

**Which sanctions lists do you check?** Every check includes a sanctions match
against the OFAC (US), UK, EU and UN lists. The response names the source and
the sanctions program behind a match.

**How do I pay for AML checks?** AML screening runs on your Blockchain API
subscription: each check uses its credits, and the developer portal lists the
credits per check. When the credits run out, a prepaid pack keeps your checks
running.

**Can I see where an address's funds came from?** Yes. Get Address Exposure
shows whether an address received funds traceable to sanctioned or flagged
addresses, directly or through intermediate hops, and List Address Exposure
Paths shows the paths the funds took.

**Can I monitor an address over time?** Address monitoring is coming soon: we
will re-screen the addresses you add and send a webhook to your URL when their
risk changes.
