# Dogecoin

Dogecoin was created in 2013 as a joke cryptocurrency poking fun at the hype surrounding cryptocurrencies. Based on Litecoin, Dogecoin quickly gained a following and the “joke” took its place in the blockchain hall of fame.

## The meme coin of cryptocurrency

Unlike Bitcoin, Dogecoin’s cryptocurrency is what’s called an “inflationary coin” - more of it becomes available over time. It has the same technology behind it as Litecoin and currently ranks in the top 50 cryptocurrencies.
